CPR and First Aid Really Do Save Lives

People often ask me whether or not CPR and First Aid can actually save somebody’s life, and I can’t help but laugh. If administering CPR and First Aid in the right circumstances didn’t save lives, I wouldn’t have devoted my life’s work to teaching the many classes (THIS LINKS TO COURSE PAGE) that I do on the topics. If you go search Google News for “CPR Save Life”, you will find stories every day about somebody’s quick thinking and training resulting in somebody’s life being saved.

One of my favorite stories took place in the summer of 2012, when baseball umpire Jim Joyce – Yes, the same Jim Joyce who blew the call that cost Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game in 2010 – saved the life of Chase Field employee Jane Powers by giving her CPR when she went into cardiac arrest multiple times. Powers, a server at Chase Field, collapsed after coming to the field early to walk laps around the stadium as she did before every home game. “My muscles contracted and they felt weird to me, so I went over to my friend and I said, ‘I don’t feel right,'” Powers said, shortly before falling to the ground. Fortunately Joyce saw her fall, and rushed to administer the CPR he had learned previously.

Powers is healthy and back at work at the ballpark, forever grateful for the fact that Jim Joyce learned CPR, and was in the right place at the right time. To give back and help ensure others are equipped to help in a situation like hers, she has started throwing parties where all of the guests are taught CPR – even mentioning that a party guest of hers used those skills to save yet another life!

Stories like this are exactly why First 2 Aid Training is in business. Our mission is that simple – To turn bystanders into lifesavers. Check out our List of Courses to learn the skills that could help you save somebody’s life. We can even throw parties like Jane Powers is to help turn your next event into a truly life-changing experience. (Follow the link to learn more)
